The ultra-fast 43 year Scottish born road racing legend Ian Simpson on a 1981 Motul Suzuki XR 69 FI won both heats of the Zwartkops Motor Cycle SA TT on Saturday, running 7 sec short of the current Superbike lap times on a superbly turned bike that ran like clockwork for both races.
A packed Zwartkops Raceway saw, Simpson a 3 times winner of the Isle of Man TT with another 8 podium appearances, 5 Northwest 200 wins, 2 Ulster GP titles and 5 British SB Championships lead from start to finish in both heats at Zwartkops on the weekend.
Simpson held off SA legend the very quick 65 year old Les van Breda on a Suzuki Katana, who finished second, third place went to Alan Duffus on a Yamaha TZ 750, followed by 65 year old Bill Simpson, Ian’s father on the second Motul Suzuki GS1000 and close behind him Mike Mc Skimming on yet another Suzuki GS 1000.
Ian was so quick and super smooth throughout the day for a retired rider that he was lapping the tail enders and finished both races with his normal customary ear to ear grin that he is so well known for.
“We had a great time at Zwartkops” said the Motul rider Simpson, and look forward to another double win in Cape Town.”
