Kawasaki Motors South Africa’s task of reconciling, paying for and physically taking control of all stock of SYM motorcycles, scooters, spares and accessories from the previous importers has been completed and the high-quality Taiwanese products are now available to the public through 38 KMSA dealers nationally. The scooter model range extends from useful 125 and 150cc commuters to the powerful executive class GTS300i Evo that can cruise comfortably between suburb and city at the national 120 km/h speed limit. Two high-quality 125cc motorcycles complete the line-up.
The SYM brand was previously managed in South Africa, first by Honda motorcycle importers Midmacor in the 1990s, and later by the official Suzuki motorcycle importers, Motana South Africa (Pty) Ltd. Midmacor and Motana each in turn withdrew from the motorcycle trade and relinquished the SYM brand when Japanese parent companies Honda and later Suzuki took over distribution of their own motorcycles and scooters in South Africa.
SYM is not one of the numerous small manufacturers that have flooded South Africa with often inferior two-wheeled product over the past decade. SYM was awarded the Best Brand title for scooters in Germany in 2011, and was also the best-selling scooter in Greece that year. Parent company Sanyang Industry Company Limited was founded in 1954 and within a decade became the first motorcycle manufacturer in Taiwan when it entered into a joint venture with Honda to build the Japanese machines in that country. SYM eventually commenced manufacturing Honda and later Hyundai cars in Taiwan and is still today the only manufacturer to produce both cars and motorcycles there. Sanyang (SYM) today turns over $1 billion a year building a million two wheelers and 35 000 cars annually. The company has won numerous product excellence as well as environmental consideration awards and their locally built Hyundai vehicles won Taiwanese Car of the Year awards in four categories in 2013. Sanyang has also built buses for the Asian market and civilian mini trucks as well as military tactical trucks for the Taiwanese national defence force.
SYM products offer superb quality at reasonable prices, with the model range kicking off at R12 495 (inclusive) for the XS125-K motorcycle and topping out at a very reasonable R 39 995 for the 29 horsepower GTS300i Evo maxi-scooter. All SYM products distributed by KMSA come with two-year / unlimited distance warranties.
KMSA Distributors are the the sole importer of Kawasaki, Triumph, & AEON ATV’s, as well as Aprilia and Moto Guzzi motorcycles in South Africa. Associated Motor Holdings, a subsidiary of the Imperial Group, is KMSA’s majority shareholder with the balance of ownership being held by KMSA management.
