9TmainIt’s back to the future with this bike and it’s funny how the wackiest of concept bikes can lead to a production model that makes perfect sense!

I was recently invited to Munich to test ride the latest bike to come out of the German factory, the R nineT Scrambler, but let me digress a bit first. Last year, BMW unveiled an R nineT based custom boxer called Concept Path22 at the Wheels & Waves Festival in Biarritz. It was named after, and theoretically built for, a dirt track leading to the local beach. It featured longer-travel suspension, a 19-inch front wheel, single seat, high-level pipes and a huge great surf-board strapped to its side, not much fuss was made about it as it mainly looked like a customised R nineT, but.....

TST mainMy chin was hard on the fuel cap and my knees were tight up again the cylinder heads, bum far back on the seat and arms, elbows and feet tucked in as far as humanly possible. My eyes darted between the road surface ahead and the large speedometer rising up in front of me in a quest to get that big needle as far around the clock as possible. Then, that magical moment arrived as my frantic brain came to the conclusion that this is most certainly as fast I’m ever going to get this particular motorcycle to go, and I rolled off the throttle with a grin, like for once I’d won more than R10 on the Lottery. The end result was an indicated 185km/h from this latest incarnation of, arguably, the most famous model name in motorcycling – the Triumph Bonneville. Now I felt ready to take on the Bonneville Salt Flats for another momentous top speed run, well sort of because I was actually just outside Jo’burg, but one can dream and imagine, right?

HondaNC750X mainimageWhat on earth does that odd title mean you ask? Well it’s quite comical actually, in a motorcycling sense, because when you first let someone experience the unique delights of Honda’s latest DCT version of their 2016 NC750X model it’s what I enjoyed saying the most.

R 1000 R mainimageWell it is really isn’t it? Just have a look around this bike and half of it is the best selling motorcycle in South Africa, so why doesn’t this model fly off the showroom floors too? Well, this is why I chose to ride this fancy red-framed BM’ for a few weeks to find out why.
